The Design:
Indecent addresses the mistreatment of Jews focusing on the time before the Holocaust and their profound loss of hope.
The sound design for Indecent centered on Jewish music, empowering the community to tell their story. All music in Indecent was composed, performed, or directly influenced by Jewish individuals or groups, reflecting Jewish culture and its impact on modern society.
Live musicians emphasized music's narrative role and its community-building impact. The music showcased instruments as cultural representatives, with the fiddle prominently featured in transitions and performances. However, when the beloved "rain scene" is cut from the play within the play, thus removing the heart of God of Vengeance and portraying Jewish people as prostitutes, the violin disappears until the scene returns and is played out at the play's end.
I felt music did not fit the tone of the beginning of the play, so for pre-show I opted to record the actors playing the part their characters play in God of Vengeance. This tied nicely with the projection design which displayed the original script that followed along with the audio.
